The longest child custody battle in history is believed to be the case of Elian Gonzalez, a Cuban boy who was found off the coast of Florida in 1999. After his mother drowned while attempting to flee Cuba, Elian was placed in the custody of his great-uncle in Miami. His father in Cuba sought to have him returned, and a lengthy legal battle ensued. The case was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Elian’s father in 2000.
